When to go to the reef: the best time for a Heart Reef flight
Light through the year
Twelve months of sun and warmth
Choose a month to compare sunset, day length and the usual warmth and rain around Airlie Beach.
Sunset
Feb
February brings 354 mm of precipitation, the most of any month.9
Jun
Mid-June has 10.9 hrs of sun above the horizon, so the day for a flight is at its shortest.9
Aug
August records 26 mm of precipitation, one of the driest months.9
Dec
Mid-December has 13.3 hrs of sun above the horizon, so the day is long.9
Sunset is worked out for the 15th of each month on Queensland time. Day length is for Airlie Beach; temperatures and rainfall come from the NOAA station at Proserpine Post Office, 20.3 km away, on the mainland, 1971 to 2020.
Flights go up in every month, so the real choice is the weather, the light and the crowds. Here is the year laid out, month by month, with the mornings, the tides and the booking windows that matter.

Flights run all year, so the weather is the question
The first thing to know about when to go to the reef is that nothing is shut. Heart Reef flights run year-round, subject to weather, and often include wide views of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.1 Day tours from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island run through the calendar, and nothing on the classic Whitsundays list closes for a season.6 Hamilton Island puts it as any time of year being a good time to visit, with mild temperatures and clear skies right through the year.7
What changes from month to month is what the sky does and how many other people want the same seat. The month figures on this page come from the Bureau of Meteorology station at Hamilton Island Airport, and mainland towns run a few degrees warmer by day and cooler overnight, especially in winter.8 Treat them as the shape of the year, not a promise for the day you booked, because a single morning can differ a lot from the average, and a dry month can still bring a grey hour.
The charts and the sun tool on this page use a mainland station. Readings are from the NOAA station at Proserpine Post Office, 20.3 km from Airlie Beach, which is on the mainland and not at the reef.9 Think of the numbers as the weather of the pickup end of the trip, and of the forecast on the day as the weather you will actually fly through. Check both before you commit to a date, and check the forecast again the evening before the flight, because the pickup is arranged around the booking.

The wet months and the dry months
January to March are the wettest months, with the rain usually arriving as a heavy afternoon burst rather than all day.3 Hamilton Island Airport averages 13 rain days in January, 14 in February and 14 in March.14,15,16 At Proserpine, February brings 354 mm of precipitation and 13 days with at least 2.5 mm.9 A Whitsundays scenic flight to Heart Reef in these months is a gamble on the morning, and the early slot is the sensible one to pick.
August, September and October are the driest months.2 Each of them averages 3 rain days at Hamilton Island Airport.17,11,18 At Proserpine the same stretch is lean as well: August records 26 mm of precipitation and September 26 mm, with 2 days at 2.5 mm or more in each.9,9 If your dates are flexible and clear air matters more to you than anything else, this is the stretch to target, and the tourism board calls September the calmest month of the year for time on the water.19
The middle of the year sits in between. April has 12 rain days at Hamilton Island Airport and May has 11, then June drops to 7 and July to 6.20,21,22,23 Hamilton Island describes April to June as mild to warm, with fewer daily showers and many days of crisp, clear blue skies.10 That makes late autumn and early winter a strong second choice, with the added bonus that the humidity of the wet season has gone.

Wind, settled air and the months between
September has the most settled skies and the lightest average winds of the year at Hamilton Island, with August close behind.11 For a small-aircraft flight, settled air is a comfort as well as a view: it is the difference between a flight that feels like gliding and one that feels like riding a bus on a rough road. Nobody can promise the air on a given day, but the odds favour the late winter months.
October to December warms up. Hamilton Island says the weather is typically hot and sunny, and that daytime showers become more likely but are usually short and quick.12 The tourism board adds that October is warm, dry and quiet, with only 3 rain days, while November has 5 and December has 8.18,25,26 Those months suit a traveler who wants warmth, a sky that clears fast after a shower and a calendar with fewer events.
The early part of the year is the one to plan around. Tropical low pressure systems can develop in the Coral Sea early in the year, and on rare occasions cyclones may form.27 A cyclone is rare, but a cancelled flight on the one morning you had is not rare enough to ignore, so build a spare day into any January to March visit. The tourism board summary is that December to February gives the hottest days, the greenest islands and the afternoon storm shows.19
Pick your month
Which month suits your trip?
Choose the line that matches what you want and the answer sits beside it.
If I want the driest, clearest air
Aim for August to October
They are the driest months, and September has the lightest winds.2,11
If I want whales on the way
Fly in winter
Humpbacks use the waters from around May to September.5
If I want space and fewer people
Choose February, March or October
They sit outside the school holidays and the events run.24
If I can only travel in the wet months
Fly early and keep a spare day
The rain usually arrives as an afternoon burst, and morning flights have the best visibility.3,4
If My dates are fixed and tight
Book now, with free cancellation
The flight sold here cancels free up to 24 hours before.
Whales, school holidays and booking ahead
Humpback whales use Whitsundays waters from around May to September, with numbers peaking in August.5 A scenic flight over the Whitsundays to Heart Reef in that stretch can pass over whales, though wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on the flight with that stated rule, so a whale is a gift and not a feature. Winter also has the fullest events calendar, so the crowds arrive with the whales.
Popularity has a price. August is the month to book earliest, because major events fall back to back and take accommodation, boats and tours.13 School holidays and major event periods can book out, so flights, accommodation and high-priority tours should be reserved early.29 Free cancellation on the flight sold here makes early booking cheap insurance, since you can cancel up to 24 hours before.
If you would rather have space, February, March and October sit outside both the school holidays and the events run, so they are the easiest months to find space.24 The trade is the weather: February is the wettest month for rain days, and March is the tail of the wet. October is the sweet spot for a traveler who wants quiet and dry air together, with only 3 rain days on average.15,18

Morning light, tide and the time of day
Flights operate year-round depending on weather, with morning departures typically offering the best visibility and calm conditions.4 That is the one piece of timing advice that holds in every month, and it costs nothing to follow beyond an earlier alarm and a coffee on the coach. In the wet season it also beats the afternoon build-up of storms, and in the dry season it fits the softer light that early morning can offer.32
For Hill Inlet, which the flight passes on the way out, early morning light gives the clearest water and the best colour separation,33 and mid to low tide reveals more of the white silica sand through the water.34 You cannot pick both with certainty, so give the tide the lower priority if you have to choose: the morning slot is a firm benefit, while the tide shifts a little every day and your slot may or may not line up.
Daylight changes the shape of the day too. Mid-June has 10.9 hrs of sun above the horizon at the Proserpine station and mid-December has 13.3 hrs.9,9 The sun tool above shows sunset by month, which helps if you are choosing between a morning flight and a later one. Use the tool to see how much daylight a winter morning really leaves you before you choose between an early slot and a later one.

If the flight is cancelled or the sky turns
Plan for a change before you need one. The flight sold here can be cancelled up to 24 hours before for a full refund. Another listed flight says that when the weather is unsuitable on the day, staff assess it and contact you directly, and the flight is rescheduled to a better time or day, or fully refunded if you cannot reschedule. Read the rules of the listing you book, because the process differs.
Keep a second plan for the same day. The reef boats keep running when the sky is grey: one pontoon day says tours to the Great Barrier Reef operate in all weather conditions, including rain, and recommends checking the local forecast 72 hours before departure.30,28 A flight needs clear air, a boat does not, so the two make a sensible pair if you have a spare day: the flight on the best morning of the stay, the boat on whichever day the sky is least kind to a small aircraft.
Reviews give one more practical hint. All 10 of the newest English reviews in the record for the flight sold here are 5-star ratings, and one reviewer advises picking a day with good weather. That advice is simple to follow if you book early in your stay and leave the later days for a second try. A flight that goes on the first day also leaves you free to enjoy the rest of the trip.
