What leaves from Hamilton Island

Tourism Whitsundays says Heart Reef is best viewed on scenic flights departing from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island or Whitsunday Coast Airport.7 A Heart Reef scenic flight on Hamilton Island is run by its own operator, Hamilton Island Air, whose products range across helicopters, aeroplanes and seaplanes. The tourism body names its Journey to the Heart experience as a helicopter flight from Hamilton Island with a private pontoon in the Heart Reef Lagoon, a glass-bottom boat tour and optional snorkelling.1

Helicopters, seaplanes and light aircraft all fly over the formation, with durations from 30 minutes to full-day trips that add a pontoon stop.8 The list of Heart Reef products on the operator pages is long. There is a one-hour scenic flight by aeroplane, an hour long scenic helicopter flight, a helicopter stopover that touches down on Whitehaven Beach and a Reef Discovery tour that lands at Reefworld.2,3,9,10 Seaplane versions include the Two Icons tour and the Reef and Beach Explorer.11,12

Not every product names the heart. The Whitehaven Photo flight, a 20 minute helicopter ride, names Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet but not Heart Reef, so check the product page before you book.13 Our own listing sits on the mainland and is a different thing: a 60-minute flight by fixed-wing aircraft from Airlie Beach with pickup included.

Choosing between the island flights

Start with time. The aeroplane flight takes approximately 50-60 minutes and passes Hook Passage, Cid Harbour and Whitsunday Passage, and the helicopter scenic flight takes about an hour.18,19,3 The stopover adds a landing, with a 40-minute flight over the islands including Heart Reef and approximately 50 minutes on Whitehaven Beach, and about 2 hours in all.9,20

Then choose the seat. Seating on shared helicopter flights is allocated on the day of travel and window seats cannot be guaranteed, while an aeroplane or seaplane experience guarantees one, says the operator.21 If a window matters more than the aircraft, the aeroplane flight, which takes you directly over Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach, is the one to read first.22

Finally choose the stop. The Reef Discovery tour includes a 50 minute return helicopter ride over the Whitsundays and the reef, with a landing at Reefworld midway.10 The Two Icons seaplane tour lands at Hardy Lagoon for a glass bottom boat tour and one hour to snorkel.23 The Heart Island tour is the premium version: a 30-minute helicopter flight and 90 minutes on a private pontoon with a boat ride around the reef.15

Time on the ground

How long the landing flights give you

  • Stopover on the beach50
  • Seaplane Explorer beach time75
  • Heart Island pontoon90

The stopover gives approximately 50 minutes on Whitehaven Beach, the seaplane explorer up to 75 minutes, and the Heart Island tour 90 minutes on its pontoon.20,24,16

Getting to the terminal and booking

Hamilton Island Air can pick you up from any of the main hotel areas on Hamilton Island, or you can drive yourself to its terminal, located 500 metres past the Hamilton Island main airport turnoff on the road to Palm Valley.4 A stay in one of those areas needs no transfer of your own, and the operator describes its Hamilton Island terminal as a drive-yourself option as well as a pickup service.

Bookings are essential. You can book online or visit the Tour Desk in the Resort Centre.5 The operator says it highly recommends pre-requesting tours to avoid disappointment, and its pricing is given on a request form, subject to change until full payment has been received.14,6,26 Terms and cancellation policies sit on the same form.27

Because the island products are request-based, plan the request early. Tourism Whitsundays recommends advance booking during busy periods, and it says August is the month to book earliest.28,29 Our Airlie Beach listing works differently: you reserve now and pay later, and cancel up to 24 hours before for a full refund.

If you are staying on the mainland

A flight from the island is not the only way to reach the heart if you sleep in Airlie Beach. Whitsunday Coast Airport suits Airlie Beach and mainland stays, while Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island suits island stays, says Tourism Whitsundays.33 The Cruise Whitsundays ferry from Port of Airlie to Hamilton Island takes an hour and ten minutes on a Tourism Whitsundays itinerary page,34 while the Hamilton Island site calls it a 60-minute crossing.35

That ferry time is the cost of starting on the island from the mainland, and it comes before the flight and again after it. Our listing avoids it. It collects you from listed Airlie Beach accommodation and marina points, runs a short bus ride of 15 minutes each way to the airfield and returns you to the same set of places. For a mainland stay, the flight from Airlie Beach is the simpler plan.

The island products do suit people who are already there. A guest staying on Hamilton Island starts at the hotel area, flies and returns to the island, with none of the ferry time. The choice follows your bed: island guests use the island menu, mainland guests use the mainland flights, and a day-trip guest has to add the ferry to the plan.

Flying in and out of the island

Hamilton Island Airport handles direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane operated by Virgin Australia and Qantas.36 Tourism Whitsundays adds that Great Barrier Reef Airport is on Hamilton Island, serviced by Qantas and Virgin Australia, with Cruise Whitsundays ferries to Airlie Beach and other island resorts.37

If you arrive by air at the island, you can book a Great Barrier Reef scenic flight to Heart Reef on the same trip without crossing to the mainland. If you arrive on the mainland at Whitsunday Coast Airport, which is about 40 minutes from Airlie Beach on one Tourism Whitsundays page, the Airlie Beach flights are within reach.38 An itinerary page from the same body gives 20 minutes by road for the same transfer, so ask your shuttle which it expects.39

Match the flight to the arrival day. A flight on arrival day can work, but weather can move it, and a spare day in the plan is worth having. Flights operate year-round depending on weather, with morning departures typically offering the best visibility and calm conditions.40 Book a morning flight early in your stay, and keep a spare day free as a back-up.

Rules, limits and who may fly

Age rules differ by product. On the helicopter flights, infants 0-2 years are only welcome on private flights, sitting on a parent lap, and children 3-13 years must be accompanied by an adult.41 The Heart Island tour is not suitable for non-swimmers or children 0-16 years, has no lifeguard on duty, and sets a minimum age of 17 years.30,42

Operators specify weight restrictions and passenger requirements when confirming reservations.43 Our own listing asks that every guest can load and unload the aircraft unassisted, climbing steps and platforms. Tell the operator about mobility, children and group size at the time of booking and let them confirm.

Drones are not an option on the island. Recreational and sport use is not permitted on Hamilton Island, Dent Island and the waters around them, because of safety concerns and the closeness of the aerodrome to the resort.32 Cameras, sunglasses and, for the stopover, a hat, towel, sunscreen and swimmers are what the operator lists to bring.31,44
