Key facts
Tourism Whitsundays says that helicopters, seaplanes and light aircraft all fly over the naturally heart-shaped coral formation at Hardy Reef, with flight durations ranging from 30 minutes to full-day experiences that combine aerial views with pontoon stops.1 The choice between them is mostly about the seat, the schedule and the stop.
The operators publish their own details, and this page uses theirs. A helicopter flight to Heart Reef, in the words of Hamilton Island Air, is an hour-long scenic flight above the Great Barrier Reef, and its aeroplane version is a one-hour scenic flight over the same waters.4,5 The aeroplane flight takes you directly over Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach, and its pilot gives a commentary as you fly over the waterways.6,7
Our own listing is a 60-minute flight in a fixed-wing plane across the island group and the reef, and its pilot talks over the route. It starts in Airlie Beach with pickup included, and it is a plane, so the helicopter rules below apply to other products. Scenic flights leave from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Coast Airport, and the aircraft you meet depends on which of those you choose.8

Seat rules come from Hamilton Island Air, whose pages say aeroplane and seaplane experiences guarantee a window seat; our listing names big windows only.2
Hamilton Island Air states the rule plainly: seating on shared helicopter flights is allocated on the day of travel and window seats cannot be guaranteed.2 For a guaranteed window seat, guests may choose an aeroplane or seaplane experience, pay a privacy surcharge for exclusive use of the helicopter, or book a private helicopter charter.2 If photographs through glass matter, that sentence is the most useful on this page.
The listings show the same split. Another Airlie Beach listing names guaranteed window seats in its highlights and limits the group to 7 participants. Another is a plane with panoramic windows and a high wing, and its pilot makes multiple passes at each location for photographs. Our own listing has big windows and a pilot who gives commentary.
None of this makes a helicopter a bad choice. It means that on a shared helicopter you accept the seat you get, while on a plane or a seaplane you can plan the view. If you travel as a pair or a small family, ask whether you can sit together and whether the seats face the reef. Operators publish their own rules, and Tourism Whitsundays notes that they specify weight restrictions and passenger requirements when confirming reservations.11
Time in the air
The shortest product is the Whitehaven Photo flight, a 20 minute helicopter ride over Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, whose page names Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet but not Heart Reef.3 A seaplane flight on the Two Icons tour is a 30-minute flight over the Whitsunday Islands including Heart Reef, before a landing on Whitehaven Beach.9 The helicopter stopover is a 40-minute flight over the islands, including Heart Reef, before touching down on the beach.12
The longer products stay up. Hamilton Island Air describes 50 minutes flying over the reef and the Whitsundays on the seaplane Reef and Beach Explorer.13 Its aeroplane flight takes approximately 50-60 minutes and its helicopter flight an hour.14,4 On the Airlie Beach side, our listing runs 60 minutes, another runs 70 minutes and a third runs 65 minutes.
The chart below sets those times side by side. Some of the shorter products land and add time on the ground, and some of the longer ones include transfers. Read each listing for what the clock includes: the flight alone or the whole outing from pickup to drop-off. Our listing, for example, lists a 15-minute bus ride each way around its 60 minutes in the air.

Our listing
A flight that lands changes the day. The Reef and Beach Explorer seaplane allows up to 75 minutes on Whitehaven Beach after a water landing.15 The helicopter stopover gives approximately 50 minutes on the beach and takes about 2 hours in all.19 Reef Discovery is a 50 minute return helicopter ride over Heart Reef, Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet that lands midway at Reefworld, a pontoon.20
The Two Icons seaplane tour lands at Hardy Lagoon for a guided glass-bottom boat tour and one hour to snorkel around the lagoon.10 The Heart Island tour begins with a 30-minute helicopter flight over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and Heart Reef, then gives 90 minutes on a private pontoon.21 Tourism Whitsundays confirms the pattern: some operators combine flights with stops on pontoons, beach landings at Whitehaven or reef walking on low-tide platforms.22
Those products are sold by Hamilton Island Air through the Hamilton Island website, and our listing is not one of them. If you want a landing on the same day, choose a flight designed for it, or pair a plane flight from Airlie Beach with a boat day. The Fly Raft package pairs a 60-minute scenic flight over Heart Reef with a boat tour of the beach.23

Age rules differ by product. On Hamilton Island Air helicopter flights, infants 0-2 years are only welcome on private flights, sitting on a parent lap, and children 3-13 years must be accompanied by an adult.16 The Heart Island tour is not suitable for non-swimmers or children 0-16 years, with no lifeguard on duty, and its minimum age is 17 years.24,25
Weight and boarding rules matter too. Operators specify weight restrictions and passenger requirements when confirming reservations.11 One Airlie Beach listing arranges seating for the best weight and balance of the aircraft. Our listing requires that every guest can load and unload the aircraft unassisted, climbing steps and platforms, a moderate to high level of mobility.
Ask before you pay if you are unsure. A flight is a small-cabin experience and operators vary in how they handle the questions. Tell them about any mobility limits, about children and about the party size, and they will confirm what is allowed. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before gives you a safety net if the answer comes late.

Before you book
Hamilton Island Air lists a doors-off helicopter photo flight over one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia, billed as a thrill-seeking adventure.26 That is the Whitehaven Photo flight, a helicopter ride, and it is not a Heart Reef flight. It is the outlier in this group, and it exists for photographers.
The rest of the menu is more conventional. Scenic flights depart from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island and Whitsunday Coast Airport.8 Tourism Whitsundays says scenic flight experiences vary from quick 10-minute island transfers to comprehensive 60-minute reef adventures.27 Flights run year-round depending on weather, with morning departures typically offering the best visibility and calm conditions.18
For travellers staying in Airlie Beach, the practical shortlist is the plane flights that pick you up at the door. For guests staying on Hamilton Island, the Hamilton Island Air menu is the natural one, with pickup from the main hotel areas.28 Either way, book the aircraft that matches your seat and your timetable, and let the heart do the rest.
